About Ashmore & James Travel Associates
Greg Ashmore opened the first ever Travel Associates business in May 1998. As Greg would tell you, “It was a big change moving from the pace of a traditional retail environment. But we owed it to our loyal clients who had a hunger for experiences to create a place where we could slow things down in a lounge-style environment and get to the heart of planning a unique and tailored travel experience”.
The unique building built in 1889 was originally known as Maloney’s Hotel and now goes by the name Canterbury Mansions, with private apartments and professional suites. A landmark in the area, the building is on the corner of historic Maling Road, a unique street that has remained totally intact for over a century with shop signage and traffic being the only real changes.
As a Canterbury local, Greg has worked with local businesses and schools for years, with clientele now second and third generation locals. The Ashmore & James Travel Associates team proudly support local school fairs with fundraising and also use local cafes and restaurants for client events.
Ashmore & James Travel Associates is based in Canterbury, Melbourne. Personal travel consultation is available by appointment from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Greg is a highly motivated travel professional with a special interest and skill in the quality of the more detailed side of leisure & corporate travel arrangements. Greg is the founder of the Travel Associates concept (1998) and is well recognised by the trade as a leader, innovator and a professional business operator.
When a travel advisor as experienced as Greg tells you his personal travel highlight, you should start taking notes. Greg has almost 30 years of experience in the travel industry and has visited 40 countries, but his all-time favourite was a trip to Machu Picchu.
“It’s a life-changing experience in itself, but we made it extra special by travelling via the Hiram Bingham train, sipping pisco sours, listening to local music, and watching the scenery move ever upwards around us as our excitement mounted. Machu Picchu is the most amazing site I have ever seen - why struggle on local buses, when the journey can be done in comfort, with local style?”
This is the type of insider knowledge that keeps Greg’s clients coming back to him time and time again. “I just love the feeling when clients know that I understand them and their travels so well that it becomes: ‘Ok Greg what are we doing this year for our travels?’”
Greg’s vast network of industry contacts is another factor that helps him bring his clients on otherwise inaccessible experiences. “I was working with a family group that contained two teenagers, who were heading to Washington DC as part of their USA adventure. I suggested a private guide in Washington who I had gotten to know well. That behind the scenes tour of DC had a monumental effect on the family. The eldest son was so impressed by the knowledge I was able to expose him to that he now works in politics and - no surprise - is based in Washington. It’s funny to think that if this family had not dealt with a travel expert they may have chosen a simple tour and things would have been very different!”
Perhaps you fancy a tropical escape? Greg is your man. He claims that nothing beats the Maldives when it comes to stunning scenery, but also vouches for cruising through the islands of Tahiti and French Polynesia. If you’re craving big city vibes, Greg also has plenty of recommendations on this front. The unique soul of New York makes it his favourite city, but he can also recommend hotels in Paris, bars in Beverly Hills and where to get the best views of Venice.
Whether you’re dreaming of an epic river cruise through Europe or a family ski trip to North America, Greg has the first-hand experience that will take you further. Get in touch with Greg at Ashmore & Turner Travel Associates - he can’t wait to hear about what destinations are on your horizon.
Rachel has more than 15 years experience in the travel industry and can speak four languages – and that’s just the beginning.
After coordinating your next holiday with Rachel, you’ll wonder why you didn’t seek her out as a professional travel manager sooner.
Having visited more than 50 countries, you would think it would be difficult for Rachel to pick a favourite. But without missing a beat, Rachel will tell you that Italy takes the cake. “I could return to Italy, year after year,” she exclaims. “Every region has its own unique cuisine, country and landscape!”
Even if you’re a discerning traveller who has already been to Italy, Rachel can help you turn over a new stone. “Regions like Basilicata and Puglia are still relatively undiscovered by Australians and it’s these gorgeous places that offer a taste of real Italy,” says Rachel.
Working with Rachel, you’ll learn how to avoid the tourist traps and discover local gems. “If you’re going to Rome, there is a small, local bar, off the Campo de Fiori, which I recommend. Italians love an aperitivo, so you can relax, sip on an Aperol Spritz, enjoy some stuzzichini, and feel like you’re a part of the culture,” says Rachel.
Rachel’s expertise is not confined to Europe. She loves creating bespoke itineraries, no matter the country or focus. Be it history, food, wine, sport, art, wildlife or photography – you name the objective, and she’ll craft a holiday, which plays to your interests.
Maybe you’d like to witness lions on a safari in Botswana? Or go on a small expedition cruise around Antarctica. Believe it or not, Rachel can give you first-hand advice on both incredible experiences.
No matter where your next holiday might take you, prepare to be immersed in the destination fully. As Rachel says: “When in Rome!”
Karen has enjoyed working in travel for over 25 years. Her career started with a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Tourism. She fortified her tertiary qualifications with travel experience, visiting more than 40 countries, from the tropical climates of Vietnam and Thailand to the snowy peaks of Nepal and Switzerland.
Karen has an affinity for adventure travel. One of her most memorable travel experiences is trekking through Nepal, the scenery was simply breathtaking. Coming in a close second is the time she explored the ancient ruins of the Middle East, Petra was definitely the highlight. From Israel to Jordan, Karen visited some incredible archaeological treasures and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
She journeyed to Chichen Itza in Mexico and the Inca Trail in Peru in search of more ancient ruins. She says South America would have to be one of her favourite destinations, because of its rich history and culture.
Not one to shy away from the wild or unfamiliar, Karen has experienced thrilling safaris in Africa and has some great recommendations for African accommodation and safaris.
“Don’t always assume destinations are best seen from land though,” Karen advises. “Cruising can offer a really interesting new perspective, and allow you to experience several great destinations in one seamless holiday.”
So whether you’re looking to visit Indonesia or Italy, Turkey or Tanzania, go by land or by sea, Karen has valuable first-hand advice that’s guaranteed to take your upcoming holiday to the next level.
Meet Travel Associates’ good samaritan, Ani Pickering.
Ani knows that the secret to a memorable holiday is not only getting to know the locals of a different destination, but contributing to the culture in a positive way.
One of the most life-changing travel experiences for Ani, was a trip to Cambodia, where she met some resident families and learned of their pressing health and education needs. Through an international organisation, Samaritan’s Purse, Ani became involved with some Cambodian community projects. “Seeing the staff of this organisation go out of their way to help others was truly inspiring,” says Ani. “The most moving and rewarding part of all was returning down the track to see how the lives of these Cambodian families had improved.”
Another place close to Ani’s heart is India. She stayed in a palace outside Udaipur and had amazing views of the Festival of Diwali. “From our vantage point high above the village, I watched dancing and festivities into the early hours of the morning,” recalls Ani. “India is just incredible – I’ve since been back eight times!”
These are just a couple of the bewildering travel tales Ani has to share. She has visited more than 50 countries, from the Scandanavian region, to South America and Europe to the United Arab Emirates.
If you’re considering a holiday to Africa, Ani is someone you want to speak to first. She has visited many times, and can suggest several magical experiences. Whether you’re contemplating Cape Town or Cairo, she knows how to add value, and keep you protected from the tourist traps.
It’s difficult to encapsulate Ani’s vast and varied experiences in just a few words. This Travel Manager has worked in the industry for an impressive 35 years. Think of where you’d like to travel to next, and chances are, she’s been there. Do yourself a favour, and make an appointment with Ani.
When we think about travelling, we consider planes, trains, cruise ships and cars. But have you ever thought about going from one destination to the next by skis?
Some of Rae's clients had, and requested an itinerary that would allow them to migrate from France to Italy, via the slopes. Rae organised an unforgettable adventure, which saw them ski through tiny villages, where they could stop and meet the locals. They tasted some amazing local produce and dined with village residents. While they skied off-piste and used skins to conquer the various peaks between places, their luggage was trucked to the next stopover. "It was such a unique way to travel and a dream come true for these experienced skiers," says Rae. "They said it is a holiday they will never forget."
It’s the kind of testimonial that proves, no travel request is too absurd for Rae. In fact, having worked as a Travel Manager for 28 years, she loves that she’s still met with an imaginative and distinctive travel requests.
It’s easy to plan fascinating itineraries when you’ve had some amazing experiences yourself. Rae says she’ll never forget waking up and see the famous Matterhorn mountain. Quite the snow bunny herself, Rae also has great memories of skiing down one of the toughest slopes in Whistler.
She says everyone needs to experience the beauty of watching the sun set from an overwater bungalow in Bora, Bora. “It’s no wonder it’s Tahiti’s most famous island,” Rae says. “The turquoise lagoon and its coral reefs are out of this world!”
Armed with a great sense of humour, Rae says she will always remember laughing with Irish locals across bars in Ireland. “You can basically go to any county, and know you’re going to have a good time.”
If you’re looking to travel to South America soon, ask her about travelling way up into the Amazon, to Manaus. “Seeing what white man and religion have done to the native Indian people is just shocking,” she recalls. “Witnessing the Amazon being bulldozed for money may not the most romantic holiday idea, but it’s something that will stay with you forever.”
For an overseas experience that’s truly out of the box, speak to Rae.
Ever wondered what it’s like to be a travel adviser day in, day out? “It's the best job one can ever have,” says Louis at Ashmore & James Travel Associates. “You know you are planning a dream for your client – a lifetime memory. In addition, the job opens up my eyes to the world – and it's a blessing to have great colleagues here too.”
Louis has over a decade of experience working in the travel industry and his passion has never waned. He also worked in the hotel industry for 10 years, which he says is extremely valuable when planning client’s trips. One example of that is when he arranged for his clients’ to have traditional food in their hotel when travelling over the Christmas and New Year period.
Louis also speaks fluent Mandarin which he finds is very handy for his clients. This combined with his wealth of knowledge and first-hand travel experiences make Louis an exceptional adviser, who can tailor exceptional itineraries around the world that cover every little detail.
On his own holidays Louis has travelled to over 29 countries, including Germany, the Maldives, New Zealand, Spain, South Africa, the UK, UAE and USA. His favourite destination is Hawaii, because it’s “vibrating, welcoming and tropical”. However, his most life-changing moment occurred in Vietnam and Cambodia. “Getting to know local life makes you really cherish and appreciate what you have, and makes you want to offer more help to others in need,” he says.
He also has plenty of travel tips to share. “In Halong Bay most people do a one night cruise. I would suggest doing two nights as it makes a massive difference, you have time to really relax and experience something special on the second day.”
In Paris he recommends The Peninsula Paris. “Go to the bar and restaurant on the top floor and enjoy the amazing view of Paris before having a nice cocktail and dinner.” But if you’re looking for a French escape where ‘the locals go’ he highly recommends Honfleur. “Enjoy the galleries and a nice seafood dinner by the river. It's a great spot to spend two nights while visiting Le Mont Saint-Michel and don't forget to enjoy a glass of Calvados,” he says.
Travel has been part of Rachel’s life from a young age. Rachel is blessed to have parents who always saw travel as an important part of a child’s life and development. From an early age Rachel’s parents took her to Europe, Canada and America for substantial periods of time so she could learn about the world and receive an education which cannot be learnt from books alone. In 2000 Rachel decided to turn this passion into a career. It didn’t take long for her to realise this was a good fit. Rachel was lucky enough to have a lot of success and moved quickly up the ranks to manage her own office. Over the years Rachel received numerous top awards including the coveted Outstanding Achievement Award at the State Awards. Rachel is able to offer her clients a wealth of personal travel experience and years planning large, complicated and luxury itineraries for the most discerning clients.
Shel has personally travelled extensively throughout Europe, Canada, USA and Asia and has also had the opportunity to cruise. Cruising is one of Rachel’s favourite travel experiences and she has a great depth of knowledge in this area. Travel highlights include cruising the Alaskan Fiords, exploring the amazing Canadian Rockies and sipping cocktails by a beachfront bungalow in the Maldives. Now being a mother herself and having travelled with young children she now fully understand the needs of families and what is important in making their holidays a success.
