Perhaps one of your new year's resolutions was to start a travel blog. Surely you've considered writing about your European adventure or that Tahiti holiday? If you always come home from your travels bursting with tales to tell and details to share, then put a pen to paper and start writing.
Whether it's for your own enjoyment and a way of preserving memories, or if you'd like to try to reach a wider audience, writing about your experiences can be incredibly rewarding.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started if you're thinking about going down this road.
Start with a journal
While you're on the road, set aside some time each day to write down your experiences and observations.
This helps you to remember key moments and details for later. If you simply want to write down your experiences for yourself, this might be all you need to do. However, if you want to publish your writing at some point, this can be a great reference to jog your memory as you look back to write on your experiences.
Read other writing
To get a sense of what some engaging travel writing might look like, check out some of the greats. Paul Theroux, Bill Bryson and Mary Morris are a good place to start and branch out from.
Learn from the best - and then break all the rules!
Edit your work
Before you self-publish or approach an organisation, be sure to have somebody else look at your work, whether a professional editor or a reliable family member or friend.
Have them not only look out for simple errors, but areas where style, structure and flow could be improved. Identifying areas for improvement that you can then work on might be what it takes to elevate your story from interesting to captivating.
