Waikiki, More Than Just a Day at the Beach

16th June 2014

Hawaii is a destination full of adventure, where practically everything you could want in a holiday is right at your doorstep. From the big city sophistication of Honolulu with its shopping, dining and entertainment, to island escapes where the secluded beaches and remote rainforests beckon, Hawaii is no ordinary collection of islands.

Travel Associates consultant Krista Watson was able to explore Hawaii and all it natural wonders, but one place she particularly enjoyed was Honolulu and Waikiki with its popular beach and spectacular Diamond Head views.

Waikiki is home to one of the most famous beaches in the world, but with so much to do, where does one start? “Waikiki is just fabulous,” said Krista. “Shopping, beautiful hotels and restaurants and amazing blue water.” What more could anyone ask for? And while the beach is world famous, so are many of the hotels – iconic properties that just happen to have Waikiki Beach as their backyard. Just steps away is the calm, blue waters of the Pacific, the long, white sand beach calling with its local charm and international allure.

It’s what’s on the other side of these beachfront havens that is equally entertaining. Kalakaua Avenue is Honolulu’s most exclusive address. With upscale boutiques, fine department stores and a huge selection of shops, cafés and restaurants, you can spend the entire day shopping till you drop, enjoying a Hawaiian coffee and coconut slice or just taking in the vibrant scene with a shaved ice, Hawaii’s most popular drink.

When you’re ready for some action on the surf, you can hit the waves for a refreshing swim, surf or boat ride. Rent some kayaks and enjoy the picturesque view of the ancient Diamond Head volcano and the distinctive Honolulu skyline. Another popular activity is stand-up paddle boarding. “Stand up paddle boarding on Waikiki Beach was very cool and something not many people would think to book,” said Krista. “It was fun, and we got some exercise too burning off all the great food and drink.”

As you can see, however you choose to spend your time in this non-stop city, you’ll be sure to have fun doing it. Thankfully, with direct flights from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, it’s a breeze to get there too.
