The adventurous side of Bora Bora

25th August 2014

Bora Bora is a luxurious land of glittering blue beaches, soft sands and endless relaxation. But it's also got a wild side. Mix up your days spent on the beach with some of Bora Bora's most exciting adventure activities.

Quad bike tours

Feel the wind in your hair as you zip around the islands on your own quad bike.

There are a number of tour providers on the island offering incredible adventures that will give you unforgettable views of the area and its surrounds. The automatic ATVs are easy to learn to drive if it's your first time or you have less experienced members of the group, and every tour starts with a safety briefing and an introductory lesson.

Your tour guide will not only ensure you don't get lost, they will also show you some of the best places to visit. This includes picturesque viewing points, and local stalls and markets where you can taste the freshest local fruits.

You will see old World War II bunkers for a historical touch before checking out some of the incredible views of Motu Toopua and the nearby Raiatea and Tahaa islands.

Aquabiking

Imagine a bicycle that can go underwater with a breathing capsule built in - this is the adventure of aquabiking.

These bikes are a safe and easy way to move around under the glorious clear waters of Bora Bora, and you don't need to be a strong swimmer or diver to navigate one. You will have your own submersible scooter that's powered by an electric propeller, with a transparent glass airlock capsule for easy breathing and air flow. They can go to a depth of 3 metres for up to 30 minutes at a time, giving you plenty of opportunities to see a stunning submerged world of tropical ocean life.

As you come back onto shore on the boat with your guide, the captain will keep everyone entertained with local folkore and geology. If you're bringing the kids, there is a minimum age requirement of eight years old to join, and the minimum age to drive an aquabike is 16.

Bora Bora lagoon exploration

Specifically designed with couples in mind, this adventure covers multiple experiences in a six-hour trip offshore.

Your covered boat will take you out onto the lagoon, where you will find breath-taking bright corals and an array of tropical fish, stingrays and the local black tip sharks darting amongst the submarine flora. Here you'll have the chance to swim and snorkel for a truly personal experience with the rays and harmless sharks.

Be sure to leave some room on your camera memory stick however, as the next stop is a magical and authentic BBQ Polynesian lunch. You'll stop off on a postcard-perfect islet and enjoy a Tahitian raw fish with salad, grilled chicken, beef and fish with local fruit for desert - all with a stunning view to Mount Otemanu.

Deep sea fishing

Bora Bora offers a fishing experience unlike any other just 1 mile off the reef.

Take a ride on a Black Water 34 fishing vessel to where the water depth drops to more than 1,000 metres. With a tropical climate, and as one of the few places on the planet where you can catch Pacific blue marlin throughout the year, the Society Islands are the perfect spot to take yourself or a loved one for a unique deep sea fishing experience you'll never forget.

You can expect to pull up some of the more common species such as Mahi-Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Trevally, Barracuda and Wahoo - or even one of the rarer types such as Sailfish, Big Eye Tuna, Striped Marlin or Shortbill Spearfish.

A travel expert from your closest Travel Associates store will be more than happy to help you set up any one (or several) of these adventures for your next Bora Bora escape.
