3 thrilling Fiji adventures

25th February 2013

Fiji isn't just a destination for basking in the sun, sipping on cocktails or reading a book under the shade of a palm tree.

Here are three activities that will really give you a taste of Fiji adventure if you're looking for a holiday with a difference.

Sawailau Caves

These limestone caves are absolutely awe-inspiring. To get to the famous innermost cave, you have to dive under rocks and bravely swim through an underwater tunnel - not for those who are claustrophobic or afraid of being underwater.

Those afraid of the dark need not apply as well, as at times, this passage can be pitch black.

However, on the other side you are well rewarded with gorgeous light filtering down into the lagoon, a truly surreal experience.

Go diving

Fiji offers great diving opportunities if you are courageous enough to head into the depths. Head out with an accredited diving provider and they will take you to some truly beautiful underwater sights.

Look out for sea turtles, giant manta rays and even some (harmless) reef sharks.

Not to mention you'll be greeted by plenty of colourful, tropical fish and vibrant coral.

Climb the Peaks

Climb up high to the peaks of the Yasawas islands, through lush rainforest scenery to reach the top of these jagged volcanos.

Tour operators or local guides can help you on your way and take you on the least arduous routes - but each walk will certainly work up a sweat, especially considering the hot sun beating down.

Make sure you take plenty of water along with you, as well as high-energy snacks to sustain you on your adventure.
