Day 1 Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, is situated at 3,310m above sea level in the Peruvian Andes and is considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Western Hemisphere. Visit the Main Square and Cathedral, where you can purchase colourful crafts and appreciate the curious and charming design of the stone walkways and streets, as well as the nearby Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Kenko, Puka Pukara and Tambo Machay.
Day 2 Enjoy a full day tour to the Sacred Valley including the bustling Indian market at Pisac where you can bargain for and buy some very beautiful Indian handicrafts as well as woollen ponchos, sweaters, blankets and bags made from llama and alpaca. Lunch at a local restaurant in Urubamba, followed by a visit to the town and magnificent fortress at Ollantaytambo. Return to Cuzco in the early evening.
Day 3 Start the day with a 3½ hour scenic train journey through the Urubamba Valley followed by a bus ride up to Machu Picchu (2,280m), the lost city of the Incas. For centuries Machu Picchu was buried in jungle until the American historian Hiram Bingham stumbled upon it almost by accident in 1911. After a guided tour and lunch you are free to explore the ruins on your own. Overnight Machu Picchu.
Day 4 Day at leisure to further explore the ruins at your own pace. Enjoy the sunrise over the ruins.
