Classic Britain Self-Drive Itinerary Suggestion
8 Days / 7 Nights London-London
Day 1: London – Cambridge
Journey north to visit Wimpole Hall, close to Cambridge. Enjoy an open-top bus tour through the ancient colleges before taking a leisurely punt on the Cam.
Day 2: Cambridge – Harrogate
Continue north to Lincoln to see the magnificent Cathedral and the fine Belton House and Gardens. Afterwards, travel to the spa town of Harrogate.
Day 3: Harrogate – Edinburgh
Begin the day with a drive to York to see the splendid York Minster, England’s largest medieval cathedral. Wander the narrow cobbled streets, visit the Jorvik Viking Centre or the torture chambers of the York Dungeons. Afterwards, continue your journey north to visit the university city of Durham. Then, en route to Edinburgh, pass Emperor Hadrian’s Roman Wall and drive through the beautiful Northumberland National Park.
Day 4: Edinburgh
Spend the day exploring the delightful capital of Scotland. Visit Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and the Palace of Holyrood. Don’t miss a visit to the Tartan Weaving Mill at the bottom of the Royal Mile and find out if you have a family tartan.
Day 5: Edinburgh – Chester
Heading south, drive through the pretty Pentland Hills to the English border, stopping at Gretna Green to visit Old Smithy, where runaways from England married under Scottish law. After crossing back in to England, take the scenic route through the Lake District National Park and onto the Roman walled city of Chester.
Day 6: Chester – Bath
Spend time exploring the shops in the historic “Rows” of Chester. Next, travel south along the Severn Valley, passing the Cotswolds and Malvern Hills to arrive in Bath.
Day 7: Bath
Discover the wonders of this world heritage city, with its fine Roman baths, superb 18th century architecture and abundance of culture mixed with modern shopping.
Day 8: Bath – London
Enjoy the leisurely drive back to London.
