Alaskan Railways Denali Star

The Denali Star, the Alaska Railroad's flagship train, links Anchorage to Fairbanks with stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali Park. On this route, sparkling salmon streams and stands of birch and spruce come into view, while carpets of fireweed add dramatic purple to the landscape.
Anchorage to Talkeetna - Anchorage is headquarters to the Alaska Railroad and the journey to Fairbanks begins here. Several miles into the trip, the heavy birch forests of Eagle River and Chugiak lead to the Knik and Matanuska Rivers.
The expansive watershed harbor's wildlife like moose, bear, the occasional wolf and abundant waterfowl. About 40 miles from Anchorage comes the Matanuska Valley, Alaska's agricultural center and home to the towns of Palmer and Wasilla.
Just south of Talkeetna, 70 miles further, the first view emerges of Mt. McKinley, North America's highest peak. The train takes its first stop in Talkeetna, a small town with a mining history and now, a popular takeoff point for climbers to Mt. McKinley.
Talkeetna to Denali - From Talkeetna, the track follows the serpentine banks of the Susitna River. On clear days, more views of Mt. McKinley emerge across the river presenting many chances for photos. Black and brown bear frequent the sandbars and scuttle into the brush as the train approaches.
Next, the Indian River Canyon is home to many beavers and beaver lodges can be seen in the ponds along the way. The track climbs toward tree line, first crossing Hurricane Gulch, the longest bridge on the railroad just over 914 feet and 296 feet above Hurricane Creek.
The train moves into Broad Pass, at 2,363 feet it's the highest point on the railroad, and where caribou migrate through during the fall. Thousands of travellers visit Denali National Park and Preserve to see wildlife like wolves, caribou, Dall sheep, moose and bear, and, of course, Mt. McKinley.

Day 2 - You awake to the magnificent scenery of the Swiss Alps as breakfast is served in your cabin at a time to suit you. Spend the morning in the Bar Car chatting to fellow guests over coffee. Enjoy a leisurely three-course lunch served in another of the beautiful restaurant cars.
While away the afternoon with a visit to the on board Boutique to purchase souvenirs, or relax in your cabin and admire passing scenery as the train travels through the Italian Dolomites. Later, afternoon tea is served in your cabin as you travel through the Brenner Pass. All too soon it is time to prepare to disembark as the train crosses the Venetian Lagoon and pulls into Santa Lucia station.

Thursday - Breakfast is served in your cabin at a time to suit you. Spend the morning relaxing in the comfort of your cabin, gazing at the beautiful passing scenery as the train heads towards Budapest, or chatting with fellow travellers over coffee in the Bar Car. Later, enjoy a three course lunch in one of the other magnificent restaurant cars before arriving in Budapest in the afternoon.
Transfer to your chosen hotel for two nights. (Accommodation and transfers not included.)
Friday - Enjoy the many attractions of Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Saturday - This morning rejoin the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express and settle back into your private cabin. Enjoy a delicious brunch in one of the beautiful restaurant cars and then maybe visit the on board boutique for a selection of finely crafted gifts and souvenirs.
Afternoon tea is served by your personal steward in the comfort of your cabin. A leisurely four course dinner is served, prepared on board by our skilled French chefs. Enjoy a brandy or liqueur with convivial company in the Bar before retiring for the night.
Sunday - Continental breakfast is brought to you by your steward as you travel towards Paris. A delicious brunch is served in the restaurant cars as you travel on towards the Channel. After crossing the Channel board the cream and umber carriages of the British Pullman for the journey to London.
A traditional afternoon tea accompanied by a glass of champagne is served to you at your table as you watch the gentle scenery of Kent pass by before arriving at your destination, London Victoria.
