Japan: Cherry Blossoms
Spring in Japan is the ideal time to visit, as the nation's unofficial national flower, the cherry blossom (sakura), is in full bloom. Many of the dozens of varieties of the blossom are at their peak for only a few short days at the end of March and the beginning of April. The sakura has been celebrated since the 7th century, when aristocrats would gather to admire the flowers and find inspiration for poetry writing. Hanami (cherry blossom viewing parties) now take a very prominent position in Japanese culture.
