Masai Mara, Kenya, Africa: Annual Wildebeest Migration - July to October
As part of the amazing wildlife spectacle known as the 'Great Migration', the first of more than a million wildebeest start arriving in July to the Masai Mara from the Serengeti in Tanzania, massing at shallow river crossings. The crossings take place continually through the period as the wildebeest move backwards and forwards over the plains. The Masai Mara is also one of the best of Africa's wildlife parks for witnessing the big cats. Lions, leopards and cheetahs abound and they are relatively easy to spot because of the grassland vegetation, which allows you unrestricted views for miles around.

The South Pacific: A wonderful time to visit
July marks the beginning of winter and the dry season for the South Pacific - the perfect time to travel, with temperatures averaging in the high 20s. The islands offer countless opportunities for outdoor activities, wonderful cuisine and romance. The relaxation paralysis that afflicts Pacific travellers is legendary, and it doesn't take long to get into the groove of reading a good book in the shade of a tree between leisurely dips in the crystal-clear sea. Many of the Pacific Islands also offer modern visitors the opportunity to explore bustling cosmopolitan cities and booming tourist resorts.

Kyoto, Japan: Gion Festival
One of Japan's biggest events, the Gion Festival transports the ancient capital of Kyoto back in time: back to 869 AD in fact, when the city was being ravaged by plague and so 66 Japanese provinces contributed a portable shrine to 'put an end' to the situation. The plague ended, the festival remained. Today, the highlight festival event is the float parade (Yamahoko-junko), in which colourful floats carrying musicians are pulled through the streets by teams of men dressed in traditional costume. The celebrations continue for almost all of July.

France: Tour de France
This is the world's most famous and most difficult cycling race, covering a varied terrain throughout France that ranges from steep mountain passes to flat city streets. The overall race leader at the end of each stage is rewarded with the infamous yellow jersey, and on the final day, thousands of spectators line the streets of Paris along the Champs-Elysees to witness the final race for the finishing line. Be there when the champagne corks fly and the party begins!
