Edinburgh, Scotland: International Fringe Festival - 3 to 25 August 2008
The Edinburgh Fringe dates back to 1947 when eight theatre groups showed up uninvited to the Edinburgh International Festival and were obliged to find alternative venues 'on the fringe' in order to perform. The Fringe has since then outgrown its sister event, which runs at the same time, and now breaks its own record every year as the largest arts festival on earth (Guinness Book of Records). More than a million tickets are sold each year for thousands of events including exhibitions, theatre, music and, the largest category of all, comedy acts. Many unknown artists are given their first break here.

Fraser Coast, Australia: Migration of Humpback Whales and the
Hervey Bay Whale Festival
The majestic humpback whales migrate between their feeding grounds of Antarctica and the Great Barrier Reef. On their return journey they enter Hervey Bay, renowned as one of the world's best whale watching locations, where they spend between three and five days resting or feeding their new born calves. Their arrival to Hervey Bay sparks off the celebrations of the annual Whale Festival, where you can enjoy great food, wine, jazz, parades and more.
