    Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

    from $2,355*

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest impresses with a truly theatrical landscape - this is a region of volcanoes, jagged valleys, waterfalls, lakes and dramatic mountain ranges. And it is here, on a flat ridge high in the forest, that Sanctuary's Gorilla Forest Camp is tucked away. It's hard to fathom that such luxury and sophistication could be available in an area as remote as this, and we did face enormous logistical obstacles - but it was worth the wait.

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is the ideal base for a gorilla tracking adventure in Bwindi. Guests can dine under the stars and relax by the roaring campfire. On cooler evenings, the central cottage provides a warm shelter. Located within the National Park, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp offers guests an unrivalled location, including the best bird and wildlife viewing in the Bwindi area.

In fact Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp often receives regular visits from the gorillas themselves, up to 4-6 visits per month. For the lucky guests in camp at those times, they may have the chance for a gorilla encounter without even leaving Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp.

The eight tents are just as impressive as the communal areas. Wooden floors and decks support comfortable warm beds, and each tent boasts a bathtub, ideal for soaking tired muscles after a day spent observing and meeting gorillas, that looks straight out into the jungle's canopy.

Day 1: Kigali - Bwindi Impenetrable National Park On arrival into Kigali, Rwanda, you will be met and transferred by road via the border point into Uganda for your stay at Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp.

Day 2: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park After breakfast, a 10-minute walk takes you to the park headquarters for a briefing before the tracking begins. Once the gorillas are located, the group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Return to camp for an afternoon of leisure and overnight.

Day 3: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Today choose to relax at camp, enjoy a bird walk or visit a local village where you can visit a honey production site, a traditional medicine man, a traditional blacksmith, a local school (when in term) and even attend a Batwa (Pygmy) tribe experience. The walk is done with the local community as part of a support programme.

Day 4: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - Kigali After breakfast at the lodge, drive back to Kigali airport with a picnic lunch box and end of safari.

Camp Jabulani, South Africa - Honeymoon Offer

    from $2,549*

The 5-star Camp Jabulani is a family-owned and managed private luxury safari lodge located within the private Kapama Game Reserve in Hoedspruit, South Africa (in close proximity to the Kruger National Park, and scenic Mpumalanga region). With a Relais and Chateaux accreditation, this camp is guaranteed to offer first class accommodation, cuisine, facilities and personalised service. But its most notable feature is the herd of trained African elephants that were rescued by the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. Visitors can experience the extraordinary impact of interacting personally with the mammoth animals on daily elephant rides (the only night safari in the world), around the waterhole as they swim and play, and in the wild habitat surrounding their stables.

This luxurious camp has only 6 suites - never more than 12 guests, while the exclusive Zindoga Villa is suited to the family traveller, or the client who prefers the more exclusive experience. Some of Camp Jabulani's notable offerings include the daily elephant back safaris, safari drives in the Big Five private Kapama Reserve, visits to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, indulgent treatments in the outdoor Therapy Lapa, gastronomic delights at the hands of the masterful culinary team, and hot air balloon excursions over the reserve.

Day 1 Hoedspruit Airport - Kapama Game Reserve - On arrival at Hoedspruit (HDS) Airport you will be met and transferred by road (30mins) to Camp Jabulani. Dinner and overnight at Camp Jabulani.

Days 2 and 3 Kapama Game Reserve - Full day of game activities include the daily elephant back safaris (as outlined below), safari drives in the Big Five private Kapama Reserve, visits to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, and at an additional cost treatments in the outdoor Therapy Lapa and hot air balloon excursions over the reserve. Nothing quite tops the first introduction to the Camp Jabulani elephants. Their sheer size and presence are humbling. And so begins the elephant safari. Guests mount their elephant via a specially constructed ramp. Saddles have been designed with comfort in mind - for both the elephants and riders. Atop their mighty spines, guests soon become lulled by the step-by-step amble - the gentle "side to side" rocking motion. Moving in single file (with Jabulani in the lead), silence reigns. Share in the ultimate African experience. View treetops, birds' nests, and giraffes almost face to face. Sail high above the bushveld and feel part of the environment, instead of being just a passive observer. On elephant back, one is truly an integral part of the experience. Guests also have the opportunity of "tucking" the elephants into their stables for the evening ahead, and of witnessing firsthand the mutual respect and genuine fondness between the elephants and their tenders. One thing is certain - one cannot help but be changed forever after sharing an experience with the Camp Jabulani elephants.

Day 4 Kapama Game Reserve - Hoedspruit Airport - After breakfast you will be transferred to Hoedspruit Airport.
