The grizzled old backpacker looked gloomily over his Lao beer across the dark and slow-moving waters of the midnight Mekong and sighed. “Give it 10 years and they will have trashed the place.”
It is 6.30am and a bright orange sun is rising behind the mountains. The twin hulls of our boat cut through water that shimmers like glass. Fish jump and buffalo swim. Villagers brush their teeth at the water's edge.
Clouds of dust mushroomed behind me as my motorbike bounced along a potholed track outside Phonsavan, a mid-sized town 400 kilometres north-east of the Laos capital, Vientiane.
