Marienne from Low & James Travel Associates shares some of her tips for planning the perfect white Christmas holiday.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas and not the kind you eat! Snow capped mountains, hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fire, Christmas carolling and of course a visit from Santa and some freshly baked gingerbread. There's nothing quite like a white Christmas, whether you love to ski as I do with my family or just enjoy the cold temperatures. There's something magical about fairy lights and when everything is covered with snow that you just can't explain. Now is the time to start planning your white Christmas getaway.

Whistler at Christmas

Whistler at Christmas

One of my personal favourites for a White Christmas is Whistler in Canada. Hotels here offer Christmas activities for the children and wonderful dining experiences including a sleigh ride, there is something surreal about skiing down the mountain to the sound of jingle bells, Christmas lights and trees dot the village to create the most amazing atmosphere, it's very special.

The American ski town of Aspen also comes to mind, not only is the skiing fantastic but there is plenty to do for the non skier. It boasts a great village with lots of wonderful restaurants, bars and shopping. The village is very compact and easy to walk around. At night fires pits blaze in the street so you can stop on the way to warm your hands or chat with the locals. A must is the cookie store where you can grab a steaming hot chocolate and some freshly baked cookies straight from the oven.

Christmas markets

Christmas markets

Some favourites in Europe include Kitzbuhel in Austria, the traditional Christmas Market in Hornberg Germany (boasting one of the highest Christmas Trees in Europe) have been around since 1570. For somewhere off the beaten track Christmas in Finland is an amazing experience where you can meet Santa and his elves, go tobogganing and visit with the reindeers. You could also find the perfect Christmas tree in the near-by forest or bake some fresh ginger bread.

Where ever you decide to spend your White Christmas it is sure to be magic...I'd love to hear about your favourite White Christmas stories and if you would like help planning a trip let me know.
