Mystical Maui

11th June 2014

Perhaps no destination in the vast Pacific region is as alluring, mystical and breathtaking as Maui.  Formed over millions of years from the volcanic activity of thousands of lava spewing vents, Maui emerged with a landscape of immense diversity.

The gigantic, tree lined mountains, ocean winds and tropical setting have all played a role in the evolution of Maui and for a relatively small island, its landscape and climate can be a lesson in these disparate influences. The vast mountains and their vegetation draw precipitation from the low hanging clouds while just miles away, the sun, sand and surf make for the ideal warm tropical holiday.

Ana Allan’s recent trip to Maui highlighted the wonderful options available to Travel Associates’ clients. Maui offers ultra-luxury mountain retreats, upscale beachfront villas and resorts as well as plenty of camping and hiking areas for those who want a more intimate connection with Maui’s fresh outdoors.

During her time on Hawaii’s ‘Valley Island,’ Ana was able to enjoy two favourite island activities – whale watching and a traditional luau. “Although Hawaii is warm all year round,” said Ana, “July to October is the best time to travel due to the low rainfall. March is also a wonderful time as it’s when the Whales pass through the waters off Hawaii.” The shallow waters off Maui’s western and southern coasts offer some of the best whale watching in the world, where the giant mammals can be seen playfully tail-slapping and blowing air through their blow holes.

Another favourite Hawaiian activity is the luau – a traditional feast where music and dance are often incorporated. The Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Hyatt Regency Maui may be slightly tourist oriented but the lavish affair offers an electric atmosphere. Authentic dance and music from Hawaii and around the pacific offer a spectacular Polynesian experience and the huge buffet features the best in traditional Hawaiian and South Pacific fare. Be sure to save room for the macadamia nut cream pie and pineapple cake – the perfect finish to a bountiful Maui holiday.
