Cape Town - South Africa's Mother City

3rd July 2014

Nestled between the dramatic cliff tops of Table Mountain and the breezy shores of Table Bay, the bustling city of Cape Town on South Africa’s south eastern shore is an exciting mix of urban sophistication and laid back beaches.

Brigid Kelly of Connelly and Turner Travel Associates recently visited South Africa and began her trip in the country’s second largest city, Cape Town, before boarding the renowned Rovos train for her journey across the wide open landscape of South Africa.

The Table Laid Out

For spectacular views of the cityscape and the often treacherous waters of the Cape of Good Hope, take the heart stopping cable car ride up the steep incline to the summit of Table Mountain. If you’re afraid of heights, this may not be the ride for you, but it offers some of the most stunning views in all of South Africa.

A City with a Past

Equally fascinating landmarks can be seen in the city. The historic Castle of Good Hope is Cape Town’s oldest surviving building. Built by the Dutch East India Company, its old walls and distinctive bastions take visitors on a journey back to the Seventeenth Century when the imposing compound was the centre of the young but growing settlement.

Enjoy a stroll through Cape Town’s most historic and charming district, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. The centrepiece for this lovely area is the Victorian clock tower built in 1882. Nearby, visitors will find trendy restaurants and cafés as well as a variety of shopping areas. Get your bearings with a ride on the waterfront’s observation wheel which offers a bird’s-eye-view of the entertaining harbour and waterfront district. In addition to the aquarium and Chavonnes Battery Museum, visitors will also find boat trips and tours departing for Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years.

What would a trip to Cape Town be without a stop at Long Street? This is the city’s trendy, cutting edge artery known for its artsy, slightly beatnik characteristics and before leaving, Brigid found that the area contained some of Cape Town’s hippest bars and restaurants – the perfect place for a final evening in South Africa’s Mother City.
