Hobart (and Tasmania as a whole) is one of Australia’s hidden gems.  There is plenty to see and do in Hobart but if you experience these five things you’ll be off to a good start...

MONA

The Museum of Old and New Art is a real eye opener.  The pieces here will have you laughing one minute (make sure you see the wall of Madonna fans) and speechless the next (don’t miss the room with the red velvet curtains).   You can visit for a few hours or for something extra special you can stay the night at the Mona Pavilions.

Salamanca Markets

The Salamanca Markets are a Hobartian institution.  Head down to Salamanca Place every Saturday (unless it’s ANZAC Day or Christmas Day, in which case the markets are on a Sunday) and you’ll find everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious food, jewellery and locally made arts and crafts.

Cascade Brewery

Around since the 1800s, the Cascade Brewery is a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon.  Go for a brewery tour and stay for a drink in the gardens afterwards.  They have all their beers on tap there but if you can’t decide which one to try, get a Paddle – six sample size glasses of the Brewery’s most popular beers.

High Tea at Villa Howden

Villa Howden is near North West Bay and looks like a beautiful Tuscan villa.  The Villa is famous for its traditional high tea (served with or without champagne) which you can experience every Saturday and Sunday afternoon.  A walk around the stunning gardens afterwards is the perfect way to finish the day.

Lunch at Mures

Mures is a family run business and an icon in Hobart.  The family pride themselves on providing their guests with high quality seafood which is sustainably caught.  Visit the restaurant which is beautifully situated on Victoria Dock and treat yourself to a dozen oysters and a glass or two of Tasmanian wine.
