3 top things to do in Bali

4th April 2014

Bali has long been a favourite holiday destination for those living in Australia and it's no wonder why. Holidays in Bali are only a short flight away, yet it feels like a completely different world.

Not only does it have a whole range of accommodation options, including many a luxurious resort and hotel, there are so many natural wonders to be discovered.

From lush, wet tropical rainforest to glorious beaches, you won't run out of things to do. Then there are the towns and villages to explore, and the wonderful spa facilities - all just for starters.

Here are three of the top things you simply must do when you venture to Bali.

Visit Kuta Beach

Located in Bali's south, Kuta has become renowned for arguably being the home of Bali's best beach. It's long been a mecca for surfers, who still flock to the town to hang 10 and ride the beautifully formed waves in such stunning natural surrounds.

You can lounge on the beach, head out for a swim or a surfing lesson, or stroll down to the main strip and explore the shops, cafes and restaurants. This town has everything you'll need and there are always friendly faces eager to share the local culture with you.

Check out the 'beach offerings' Balinese people sometimes make to the ocean, at the temple by the beach and the Hard Rock Hotel - another attraction in itself, especially for the young visitors to the region.

You'll find you have plenty of downtime when visiting Kuta, so prepare for some lazy strolls along the beach and plenty of rest and recuperation.

Take a spa at Seminyak

A little further north than Kuta is Seminyak, an area renowned for its luxurious touch.

Not only is it home to beautiful stretches of golden sand, opulent resorts and fine dining, it's got wonderful spas as well. Most resorts have spa facilities as part of their complex, however there are some dedicated facilities, too.

Indulge in anything from a rejuvenating facial to a hot stone massage, or some age-old beauty treatments developed through local Balinese traditions.

What about a couples' massage, mani or pedi, hair treatment or makeover? All are possibilities at the spas in the Seminyak region. In many cases, you can even request an in-villa massage if you are staying at a resort facility.

In some cases, you can even get a massage or beauty treatment right in the heart of nature, on the beach or nestled in garden and forest surrounds.

Get a taste of life in Ubud

Ubud is a bustling centre of Balinese culture and certainly has an air of magic about it. The beautiful undulating mountain landscape of green contrasts perfectly with the bright golds, reds and blues you'll come across hunting for trinkets at the Ubud markets.

One of the first things to do is visit the ancient temples dotted throughout the region, such as Goa Gajah, a sacred sanctuary, or the Puri Saren Agung Royal Palace.

Take a hike to explore rice paddies and forest trails and be sure you don't leave Ubud without witnessing a cultural performance of song and dance, as this town is one of the best places to do so. You can't go far in Ubud without stumbling upon a great gallery or museum, which is one of the reasons why it's such a great destination for those craving a culturally enriching experience.

With a range of accommodation to suit all tastes, you won't have a hard time settling in to this bustling destination. Don't forget to try some authentic Balinese cuisine while you're there - the spit-roasted pig is particularly delicious!
