Ski Niseko, Japan

In March last year Russell from Elliott & Turner Travel Associates spent eight days skiing in Niseko, an area of Japan's northern most island, Hokkaido. Hokkaido is famous for its massive quantities of light dry snow, rich culture, untouched scenery and welcoming hospitality.

Russell's first glimpse of Hokkaido was from 35 000 feet over the Sea of Japan. When he saw the masses of snow on the beach and snow clad volcanoes he knew he was in for a superb ski experience.

Niseko ski area is a truly world class ski resort .The hub for the area is the village of Hirafu sitting just beneath Mt Annupuri. From here there are four interlinked ski areas. On one pass you can ski all four areas including the incredible night skiing covering terrain approximately the size of Thredbo.

Accommodation varies from ski in/ski out deluxe apartments to unique art deco townhouses and a multitude of quaint lodges and chalets. There are also numerous "Onsens" or spa facilities. There is no shortage of eateries with a range of restaurants to suit all palettes with Asian, European and western flavours available.

The skiing was just superb with a variety of terrain to suit all abilities. Niseko area is also renowned for its phenomenal off piste areas - a great place for the advanced skier/boarder to the beginner alike. On piste the slope grooming exhibits true Japanese perfectionism. However with two days of solid heavy snowfalls even this devotion gave way to thigh deep all day on piste powder.

Skiing this area in March has many advantages including an average 4.5m of snow and temperatures of -7 degrees Celsius. You also have smaller crowds than January or February which covers Australian school holidays, the ice festival and Chinese new year.

There is plenty to see and do around Niseko. Rusutsu, about 45 minutes away, is one of many ski areas nearby. The western coastline, about one hours drive away, is littered with quaint coastal towns such as Iwanai, worth a visit for some unbelievable seafood. On a clear day you can take a relatively short hike to the summit of Mt Annupuri for a 360 degree view from the Sea of Japan to central Hokkaido.

For Russell, the warmth of the Japanese people will not be forgotten. Japan is truly one of the most underrated destinations on this vast planet of ours.

Now is the time to start planning your Japan ski holiday. For more information or to make an appointment call Russell on 1800 217 032.
