Rachael Heelan from Ross & Turner Travel Associates has recently returned from her adventure in Africa travelling to Botswana and Zambia. African Wildlife Safaris and South African Airways organised an exciting trip visiting the world famous Okavango Delta, the magnificent Victoria Falls (Zambian side), Johannesburg with accommodation at Wilderness Safaris' "Premier" and "Classic" camps.
Xigera Camp is a "classic" camp in the Okavango Delta. This is a great base for bird watching and searching for hippos. All activities are water based so it's a great way to see a different side of Africa.
The next stop in this journey was Vumbura Plains. This camp is a "premier" camp with so much larger and more luxurious rooms. The tented camps are dotted throughout the bush each with their own private courtyard with plunge pool and sun lounges together with a magnificent view across the wetlands. Game is plentiful and we spotted giraffes, lions, elephants, hyenas, baboons, buffalo and the difficult to find leopard. On returning to our tent one evening we had a mum and baby elephant eating from the trees right beside our swimming pool. What a lovely way to fall asleep - just with the sound of hippos in the distance, elephants eating from our trees and just the peaceful sounds of Africa.
Kings Pool Camp was next on the itinerary and once again this was a "premier" camp. Tents were large with double showers, sitting room, and a private courtyard with plunge pool and views across to Namibia.
The Zambia side of Victoria Falls is magnificent but to appreciate the fall's size, you must partake in an air activity. Our flight did numerous figure 8's over the falls and they certainly take your breath away. Livingstone is a great city to base yourself in for all activities around the falls and the Zambezi River. There is also fantastic market shopping for all your African souvenirs. Make sure you get to Johannesburg Airport early for your flight home. The shopping is some of the best you will find in an airport and you can certainly leave all your souvenier shopping until you get here if you haven't had time.
