Last month, Tony Freedman of Freedman & Turner Travel Associates travelled to Botswana and Zambia experiencing magnificent wildlife, luxurious lodges and remarkable scenery.
The Botswana stay was a fly in/fly out safari travelling on a combination of small light aircraft and helicopters. Commencing in Maun, Botswana we spent 5 nights in very small camps with a maximum of 6 to 10 'tented' lodge rooms per camp. The stay was fully inclusive of all game drives (minimum of 2 per day), 5 meals a day, unlimited drinks including spirits, wine etc, and complimentary laundry.
One night was spent at Xigera, a classic style camp in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Highlights included boat and mokoro trips to view game with fantastic birdlife in the wet delta. Two nights were spent at Vumbura Plains arriving by helicopter. This was a premium upmarket property with spacious rooms and plunge pool, sunken lounge and very open plan. Wildlife all around. A further two nights we stayed at Kings Pool Linyanti another premium property on the Namibian border. Very famous for huge herds of elephants in the dry season.
The Premium lodges are incredibly spacious and well appointed. Supreme luxury in the middle of nowhere.
Arriving at Victoria Falls on the Zambia side, one night was spent at Wilderness Safaris Toka Leya lodge located on the Zambezi River. It was premium style accommodation. A sunset boat trip on the Zambezi was very relaxing and a good spot to view hippos while having a sundowner . The final evening was at the 4 star David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa, a new hotel lodge bulit on the Zambezi closer to the Falls.
The highlight of this trip was walking into the Victoria Falls mist on the Zambian side and getting incredibly wet. The water volume is at its highest in May/June. If you have time I would highly recommend visiting both sides of the falls. There are also plenty of activities such as bungy and light aircraft rides for the adventurous.
