1. Four Seasons Resort Whistler, Canada

Working with Whistler Blackcomb, the hotel offers an exclusive ski instructor program, with private instruction via walkie-talkie headsets. Ski and snowboard disciplines can be one-to-one, or in groups, at any level. Afterwards, relax with an Après Ski Massage and, while you laze in the heated outdoor jacuzzi, servers offer what some say is the world's best hot chocolate, with homemade cookies.

2. Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt Buenos Aires, Argentina

Where else can you learn to tango under Murano chandeliers (and you know the hotel's General Manager is himself a fanatic of the dance that comes from this vibrant city)? They can lay on whatever classes you want, and direct you to some of the best tango shows in town. To recover, enjoy a sampling of fine Argentinean wines in the hotel's Duhau Restaurante & Vinoteca, where 350 labels are on display, and try some cheeses in the dedicated cheese room.

3. The Grove, Chandler's Cross, England

Gardening classes with onsite specialist David Roberts are in the orchid house, or the well-stocked three-acre walled garden, built in 1878 for the Earl of Clarendon (this also has a small beach and shallow pool, but they are for sun-worshippers!). Twenty minutes from London, you also have 300 acres of rolling pasture, golf and a fabulous spa with Olympic-sized indoor pool.

4. Villa San Michele, A Doccia, Fiesole, Italy

To make perfect pasta, or cook anything Italian, learn from the masters in the conservatory studio-kitchen attached to the hotel. Most popular are the half-day classes, on Monday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, through lunch, guided by Executive Chef Attilio di Fabrizio (maximum ten students, one per station). Afterwards enjoy a bellini as you sit on the terrace looking far down at Florence, 20 minutes away.

5. One&Only Le Saint Geran, Mauritius, Indian Ocean

This resort is for all-round sports. Learn diving, with PADI- and NAUI-certified instructors who can take you to dive certification in Open Water, Advanced Open Water or Rescue Diving. You also have deep-sea fishing, Gary Player golf, Peter Burwash tennis, or how about taking aerobics or yoga classes? If all that is too much, merely borrow a bike and cycle, on the flat.

6. The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore

The 4,200 pieces of modern art in a hotel that itself looks like a giant sculpture include pieces by Dale Chihuly, Rainer Gross, David Hockney, Elsworth Kelly, Henry Moore, Malcolm Morley, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Zhu Wei and Larry Zox. Learn more via a 28-minute self-guided podcast art tour. Later, think over what you have learned while swimming in the big pool surrounded by tropical greenery.

7. The Peninsula Palace Beijing, China

The ideal way to learn Chinese antiques is with such a renowned collector as Liu Guo Zhu. The Peninsula Academy's class starts with a guided walk along Liulichang street, a small alley lined with shop facades bearing Ming and Qing Dynasty architectural features. At his Cui Wen Ge curio shop Mr Liu shows his own pieces, and explains how to tell a fake. You may then want to take one of the hotel's bikes for a spin around the Forbidden City, ten minutes away.
