Huvafen Fushi, on Male Atoll, has an ultimate infinity pool. It is T-shaped, with the leg depth gradually increasing towards the arm of the T, which provides good lap swimming across the arm (the infinity edge facing out to the Indian Ocean). An extra plus is that the base of the pool is studded with thousands of fibre optic lights. At night, these are illuminated, and you can dine Between The Stars, your table in the shallowest water, the underwater lights below and the real, crystal-clear, stars above. The castle-like Gran Hotel la Florida, at Tibidabo, 30 minutes above, and looking down to, the city, is an amazing renovation of a 6-floor icon built in 1925, later to be a hospital during the Spanish Civil War. Today, as part of the Stein Group, the 74-room Design hotel includes a heated year-round indoor-outdoor pool, 130 feet long, base and sides stainless from Sweden, the outside infinity end looking far down to the sea, 1,000 feet below. At Kauri Cliffs, an ultra-luxury lodge on 6,000 acres of cliff-top pasture, the oval infinity pool - overlooking the 9th hole of the David Harman-designed championship golf course and the Pacific far below - has an inset hot tub. Joint General Managers are Mark and Joanne Netherwood.
At the unique Jebel Ali Resort - which has its own beach, on-site golf course and shooting range - the curvilinear infinity pool of the exclusive Palm Tree Court and Spa looks into palm trees, and the Gulf. General Manager of Jebel Ali is Gerhard Hardick.
Book ahead now for the two-floor Presidential Suite which opens at the InterContinental Hong Kong by the end of the year. The largest suite in Asia will have its own 60 foot outdoor infinity pool - drink Dom Pérignon as you watch the nightly 8pm laser show emanating from the sky rises in Central, across the harbor on Hong Kong Island. Taj Exotica Resort and Spa must surely hold the record - it has a total of 66 infinity pools, one for each of the 65 villas and a large resort pool that has a fan-shaped infinity edge. 28 miles up and inland from Cannes, the 115-villa Four Seasons Resort Provence at Terre Blanche, on 658 acres of wooded hillside, has a 100 foot infinity pool formed of tiny shiny glass tiles. It is heated year-round, so I swam there last December, looking out at the spectacular winter landscape. General Manager is Dimitrios Zarikos.
