Making the most of air miles and points

Air miles or points are earned by flying or buying services from frequent flyer program partners and make up the 'currency' you collect to redeem or upgrade tickets. Typical frequent flyer benefits include extra baggage allowance, dedicated check-in, free use of airport lounges, priority waiting lists, and priority for upgrades,as well as bonus points when you stay at an affiliate hotel.

1. Choose an airline that best serves your travel need and use only that airline and its affiliated partners, including airlines, hotels and car rental agencies.
2. Consolidate your miles onto one charge or credit card.
3. Always provide your frequent flyer number when booking your trip; make sure you read your statements carefully and compare your mileage figures with the airline's figures; go online and watch for bonus offers to earn additional miles.

Typically, air miles remain valid for three years, but it's important to check with your frequent flyer program.

Redeeming air miles

Redeeming miles can be a tricky matter. Airlines often limit the number of redemption seats available on certain routes and create blackout periods around holiday times. Miles can also be used for upgrades and various non-travel awards.
