Like most islands in the Pacific, Vanuatu provides year-round swimming conditions with temperatures ranging between 23 to 28 degrees. November to March is the wet season where Vanuatu experiences warm temperatures, high humidity and rainfall. From April to October is Vanuatu’s dry season and a peak time for tourists. Temperatures in Vanuatu at night can be quite cool particularly during the dry season.
Vanuatu is a culturally diverse country with many customs and traditional celebrations. Some of the island’s most exciting events occur during the peak tourist season when weather conditions are at their best. On July 30, Vanuatu celebrates its independence with traditional dance ceremonies, sports events and other festivities. Another traditional celebration worth witnessing is Naghol, also known as the Pentercost Land Dive. Not for the faint hearted, Naghol sees young men perform a traditional bungee dive from tree towers using only vines tied to their legs. This fertility ritual takes place every Saturday during April and June.

Sights to See
Only in Vanuatu is it possible to mail a postcard home from under the sea. The world’s only underwater post office can be found three meters below the surface in Hideaway Island’s marine sanctuary. Divers and snorkelers can duck down to post special waterproof postcards which are uniquely embossed instead of stamped. For a water sport with a twist, experience Hydro Zorbing on the island of Efate where you’ll roll down the Mele Hills inside a slippery, giant inflatable ball.
Get to know more about Vanuatu’s culture by taking some time to mingle with the locals at the Port Vila Markets. Here you will find a kaleidoscope of bright colours from the tropical dresses worn by stall holders to the fresh fruit and flowers for sale. Venture to the village of Mele for the beautiful waterfalls.
Although the majority of Vanuatu’s volcanoes are dormant, there are still a few that are active and ready to put on a show. Tourists can visit Tanna Island’s Yasur Volcano - one of the world’s most active and accessible volcanoes. During the wet season is when you will see the most action - just be sure to stay on the designated paths for safety.
Another great way to get around and experience the islands is with a tour. These can include anything from walking tours, diving tours, busses and boat tours.
Don’t Leave Without…
Although Vanuatu does sell sun protection and insect repellent, it can be quite expensive. Pack an ample amount and don’t forget to re-apply your sun protection every few hours.
Holiday makers who are keen to explore and experience Vanuatu will most likely take part in day trips to view other islands, reefs, rainforests or volcanoes. For these trips it’s recommended you bring a carry bag, comfortable walking shoes, a weather proof jacket and a sense for adventure.
Even though Vanuatu is a warm tropical paradise, temperatures can unexpectedly drop at night especially during the winter months. Take some warm clothing just in case.
Local Customs
A traditional ceremony usually takes place during any significant event of village life including marriages, rites of passage, initiations and deaths. Where most westerners call upon lawyers and attend court to settle civil disputes, in Vanuatu many social disputes are resolved through the exchange of food, mats and pigs. Pigs with round tusks are of particular value and are a symbol of wealth within the community.
Men take on the leadership roles within Vanuatu and go through many ‘coming of age’ rituals. They are also part of a village’s hierarchy with the chief holding the most power and respect. Traditionally, only men were allowed to congregate at nakamals to drink Kava, although now women can take part too.
Tipping and bartering are not practised in Vanuatu, although tourists do sometimes tip staff for good service which is welcomed.
Things to be careful of…
Seafood
Seafood in restaurants should be safe to eat but be careful of the produce found at the markets. The last thing you want on your island holiday is a bout of food poisoning. Instead, admire the produce and maybe give the stall holders money in exchange for taking photos.
Alcohol
It is illegal to purchase alcohol from midday Saturday until Monday morning. However bars and restaurants are allowed to serve alcohol during this period.
Siesta
Vanuatu still practices the European tradition of siesta where shops close between 11am and 1:30pm. Avoid getting caught out and make an effort to do your shopping when you can. If you see something you like you should buy it at the time as the store may be closed when you return.
