The Cook Islands enjoy similar weather to Hawaii; sunshine filled days with regular showers. Summer takes place from November to April. During this season, temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees, humidity is at an all time high and rain and storms occur regularly. The winter months are May through to October which bring about cool and drier weather.
Over the Christmas and New Year break the islands are buzzing with holiday makers and locals who have returned home. This time of year is the island’s peak season with air fares and accommodation prices increasing. September and October are the best months to holiday in Cook Islands as the days are wonderfully warm without being too humid.
September and October is also a good time to experience Cook Islands’ culture as the islands are buzzing with celebrations. The Te Maeva Nui Festival takes place in early September and celebrates the islands’ self-rule with singing, drumming and dancing. Later on that month and through to October The Cook Islands host the Pacific Mini Games with sporting teams from surrounding Pacific Islands participating. The games are the biggest event in The Cook Island’s calendar.

Sights to See
Reefs completely surround the Cook Islands so snorkelling and diving is great. For the best spots head to the south east side of Rarotonga and the northern tip of Aitutaki.
Keen fisherman will be spoilt for choice. Those with a strong stomach should try their hand at deep sea fishing with one of the many charters available. Fly fishing is also incredibly popular as the Aitutaki Lagoon is home to some of the world’s largest bone fish. Go along with a guide to increase your luck.
Te Vara Nui Village is one of Rarotonga’s most popular tourist attractions. The Village is the Cook Island’s cultural centre and offers a range of experiences from educational village tours and energetic night time shows. Don’t Leave Without…
Sharp coral and stone fish are common in the Cook Islands so pack a pair of reef shoes to avoid cuts and stings.
The heat from the tropical sun is intense so bring sun protection and don’t forget to re-apply every few hours.
If you visit the Cook Islands in the wet season its more than likely you are going to get caught out in the rain. Pack a raincoat, plastic bag and shoes that can withstand the mud and make the most of the rainy days.
Local Customs
Like other island destinations, locals mark special occasions with feasts, drums and dancing. Feasts usually involve meat cooked in an oven in the ground called an umukai, served alongside Ika mata and potato salad.
While there are a number of religions in The Cook Islands, Christianity is dominant and Sundays are treated as a day of worship and rest.
Things to be careful of…
Alcohol
All bars on the island have to close at midnight except on Friday when they can stay open until 2am. Alcohol is not sold at grocery stores on Sunday.
Clothes
Don’t wear your swim suit or go shirtless in public places as this may cause offence.
Water
Water is not chemically treated here so stick to drinking only bottled water.
