Day Trips & Tours in New Zealand

Whether you’re enjoying the sights of the North Island or the South Island, there is an endless array of daytrips or overnight excursions to indulge in.

No matter where you find yourself in New Zealand, you’ll be sure to find a bountiful collection of inspiring scenery. Explore the limitless coast and its many quaint cities and towns or head to the hills where serene lakes reflect the snow capped mountains and bright blue sky. Here are just a few day trip ideas:

North Island – When arriving in New Zealand, it’s common for most trips on the North Island to originate in Auckland. Head in any direction and you’ll find plenty of road trip options when setting out on a discovery tour. This diverse island is made up of 9 separate regions, including the sub-tropical area of Northland at the northern tip of New Zealand. On the south end, enjoy the “coolest little capital in the world,” Wellington. Drive the scenic roads in between and you’ll find therapeutic hot springs in the “sulphur city” of Rotorua and much in the way of geothermal activity. Head to the Hawke’s Bay region on the delightful east coast and make a stop at one of 75 wineries.  Historic streetscapes with art deco buildings, classic cars and period costumed residents take you back in time, to the simpler days of the 1930s in the delightful town of Napier.

South Island – The south island is blessed with stunning natural beauty. Half way between Christchurch and Queenstown you’ll find magnificent mountain ranges and popular ski fields. Crystal clear lakes dot the landscape and offer a scenic place to unwind with a picnic. View icy glaciers and abundant rainforests in Westland Tai Poutini National Park. A short day trip from Christchurch, the lovely little town of Akaroa provides a quaint backdrop for a fish and chips lunch and relaxing walks along the picturesque bay. A must do while visiting Akaroa is a nature cruise where you'll get the opportunity to get up close to sea lions, dolphins and other magnificent creatures of the sea.
