Five times voted the World’s Most Livable City, as the Melbournians know, marvellous Melbourne has just always been that way.

She’s Australia’s capital of fashion and a leading centre of literature and the arts. And who couldn’t love a city that has a public holiday for a horse race? Or where AFL football can knock the Prime Minister off the front page.

In this city of contrast and contradiction, some of the world’s finest art galleries, sit comfortably alongside government-funded street graffiti. Wide tree-lined streets and grand Victorian-era architecture, transform effortlessly into webs of tiny laneways.

With more restaurants and cafes per capita than any other city; an assortment of cuisines that read like a list of the United Nations; and bang-on-trend bars, there’s something to tempt every taste bud.

While she is certainly sophisticated, there’s also a touch of the rebellious about her far from Victorian attitudes, with her bohemian counter-culture and irreverent sense of humour. You can be whoever you want to be here – as long as you’re wearing black.

Like her seasons, Melbourne is ever-changing. Layer by layer, this southern belle seemingly raises her lace petticoat a little, revealing a bit more of herself on every visit.
