From shopping excursions and harbour cruises to adventure tours and island expeditions, there are a wide range of day itinerary options available both in and around Auckland.
Care to venture out of the city? The surrounding Auckland area and North Island offer excellent locations for hiking, biking and all kinds of outdoor activities. Discover majestic waterfalls within the nearby forest ranges or make your way to a secluded beach for some peaceful quiet time. Mission Bay and Saint Heliers are just a 15 minute drive along the water from the CBD and offer a charming seaside atmosphere with lovely beaches, water activities and many waterside cafes and restaurants. A 12-minute ferry ride from downtown you can also visit Devonport, a picturesque seaside village with cafes, boutique shops, a beach and Mount Victoria – a volcanic cone with fantastic views from the summit.
Harbour cruises, fishing tours, island day trips and river cruises are all great ways to experience Auckland’s dramatic coastal beauty from the water. Organised tours and ferries depart for the outer islands such as Waiheke and Rangitoto (which are both perfect for day trips) regularly and tours offer a revealing look at New Zealand’s geological past, coastal beauty and maritime wonders.
Take a coach or private tour highlighting the historic and cultural sites of the city. From heritage listed buildings, iconic parklands and gardens and all the best museums, the rich cultural scene sheds light on Auckland’s fascinating past. For those interested in something slightly more exotic, consider a visit to the Auckland Zoo or the Sea Life Aquarium. Realistic habitats at these wildlife parks will transport you straight to the ocean deep or the untamed wilderness.
If you have a car, 50 minutes north of Auckland you’ll find the Matakana region with beautiful beaches, boutique vineyards, excellent cafes and restaurants and a local arts scene. 50 minutes west of the city you’ll find the lush rainforest of the Waitakere Ranges with numerous bushwalks and waterfalls and dramatic black sand beaches.
